There are around 720,000 people in Cyprus with two kinds of people living in separate areas of the island. The northern part is dominated by the Turkish Cypriots whereas the southern with the Greek Cypriots. Out of the total population 78% of the people are Greek and 18% of them are the Turkish. These two groups have their distinct identity. In spite of the fact that they are on the same island they are poles apart. Each group has their own schools. The major economy of the island is directly or indirectly depends on the agriculture.
Most of the people here are farmers. The people living in country areas have traditional dressing style with decorated vests and long black trousers for men called Vrakas. Women wear skirt and blouses called sarkas. The city people no longer wear traditional dresses they go for modern clothing. The people of Cyprus are down to earth, polite and are known for their hospitality. The people hear are kind and consider guests as the most important person and is treated with friendship and utmost respect.
The native language of the people is Greek but millions of tourists coming here, English is spoken almost everywhere in Cyprus. The most remarkable thing that is a matter to be pondered upon is the low crime rate. As compared to the ever increasing violence in the world this small island is peace loving. The Cypriots are extremely hard working people with always a smile on their face.
